Elders and moms choose home remedies over mainstream medicine

BKSURESHV@GMAIL.COM
Did you know you could treat an ear infection with an onion or use eucalyptus leaves to treat a cold? Local mothers and elder members of family often advise safe and natural remedies in place of western medicine for many illnesses.

"Being holistic is about understanding how things are connected," said Nancy Massotto, founder and executive director of Holistic Moms Network. "It's all interconnected — the choices we make, the foods we eat — it all makes an impact on our bodies. The choices you make have an impact on you."

For chapter co-president Marissa Bunker of Rockville, living a holistic lifestyle means eating organic foods and buying local. She also uses safe, all-natural household cleaners that are environmentally friendly. For Joy Hawk, co-president of the group, living holistically means using cloth diapers on her children and practicing homeopathy, a form of alternative medicine that uses medicines and remedies found in nature.

"What brings us together are natural solutions," Massotto said. "There are some basic, simple natural things to surround our family with that's good for their health."

Some people don't agree with the holistic philosophy. There are pediatricians that refuse to accept patients that are not vaccinated, Bunker said. Others do not support the group's stance on extended breastfeeding, but it's nothing holistic mothers have not heard before.

"There's always going to be critics. When you go off the mainstream, you get criticized," Massotto said.

Mushrooms, Health and Anti Aging

Mushrooms are fungi and there are literally thousands of different kinds of mushrooms that people can eat. Overall, it can be said that mushrooms are a good source of potassium, a low-calorie way to flavor food, are a great source of fiber, are a good source of selenium (a mineral that is being researchers for its anti aging properties) and have some substances that are being investigated for their role in preventing hormone-related cancers (like breast cancer and prostate cancer).

Other Anti Aging Uses of Mushrooms

You’ll find mushrooms showing up in all sorts of elixirs and face creams with claims of anti aging effects. As far as I know, none of these claims has been thoroughly researched, so you’ll have to use your own judgment. On one hand, smearing mushroom cream on your face seems better than some of the chemicals found in most face creams — but who knows for sure?

Reflexology

Reflexology involves squeezing certain parts of the feet, hands and ears in order to improve health.
The idea is that certain pressure points on the body can become blocked. The life force flows through the body and heals injuries, strain and illnesses.
Reflexologists are aware of various pressure points that must be squeezed in order to relieve blockages on certain parts of the body.
What happens during the session?
During the reflexology session, firstly the reflexologist places your feet in warm water to cleanse, relax and soften your feet.
Then, the reflexologist uses his thumbs to apply pressure on the particular points on the sole of the foot that are connected with different parts of your body’s organs.
During the reflexology session, massaging the feet helps to break up the uric acid crystals that are developed in your feet thus reducing the gout and offering good blood supply to the areas.
This process allows the tissues to become fully oxygenated so that they may become more functional.
Not only foot problems, but headaches, back painsinus congestion and other health problems can be relieved by this technique
Reflexology

  • · the ball of the foot is related to the chest and lungs
  • · the arch is related to the internal organs
  • · the toes are related to the head and neck
  • · the bone on the inner arch of the foot is related to the spine
  • · the heel is related to the sciatic nerve and pelvis
It is also believed the right side of the foot is related to the right side of the body and the left side of the foot to the left side of the body.
The reflexologist may look at a map of the body while the person describes his or her symptoms. The person can point out on the map where the problems are. The map shows what pressure points on the foot are related to the areas where the problems are occurring.
The person is seated or lying in a comfortable position. After pinpointing the proper pressure points, the reflexologist then gently massages the foot to warm it and relax it. Then the reflexologist applies pressure to the specific points on the foot. Sometimes he or she uses special tools to apply pressure. Usually one foot is treated first and then the next.
Each session lasts 30 minutes to an hour. At first, the treatments may be done every week. Then they may be scheduled further apart. The reflexologist may also teach a person how to relieve pressure points at home. There are certain items, such as sandals or foot supports, that may be added to the treatment as well.
A person with a serious illness should check with his or her health care provider before having a reflexology session. Reflexology is not a substitute for:
  • · regular medical check-ups
  • · good exercise
  • · proper nutrition
The reflexologist does not treat foot problems, such as calluses, ulcers, or injuries.
Reflexology is a complement to more traditional medical treatment. A person should have any underlying conditions evaluated, treated, and followed up by a healthcare provider. Persons with certain conditions should check with their healthcare provider before being treated by a reflexologist. Some of these conditions include:
  • · stasis ulcers
  • · a history of blood clots, such as deep venous thrombosis
  • · any problems with blood flow in the lower legs
  • · Pregnancy, because some pressure points on the foot can cause uterine contractions
There is currently no national legislation or licensing requirements for practitioners of reflexology in the US. To find a reflexologist, persons can check with a center of alternative medicine at a large medical center or ask a massage therapist whom they know and trust.
Reflexology should not be considered a “cure” for any conditions. It is used to relieve or reduce symptoms, problems, and stress affecting the body. Health professionals should be cautious about a reflexologist who claims that this is a valid way of assessing health or for treating diseases.
Since reflexology treats the whole person, not the symptoms of disease, most people benefit from treatment. The therapy brings relief to a wide range of conditions. It is suitable for all ages. More and more people are using this safe, natural therapy as a way of relaxing, balance, and harmonized the body.
When time does heal old wounds. Emotional pain will not last forever. While it’s true that deep scars can be left behind, the intense pain associated with the trauma does tend to wane and yield to time.
When the hole created by the pain begins to be filled-in with love and grace, hope begins to seep through until its healing presence can at least start working on the edges as it gradually moves more towards the core.

TIPS TO HELP YOU
ANEMIA: Avoid drinking tea (regular, not herbal varieties) and coffee immediately after meals, as the tannin present in these interferes in the absorption of iron from the food. Drink a cup of herbal tea mixed with 1/4 cup blackstrap molasses each day. This provides 80% of the iron needed in one day.
Foods high in iron: lean beef, lean pork, skinned poultry, shellfish, fish, liver, organ meats, egg yolks, pinto, kidney, lima, navy, chick peas, black-eyed peas, lentils, split peas, green peas, spinach, kale, collards, beet greens, chard, broccoli, raisins, prunes, figs, dates, dried peaches, dried apricots, nuts, peanut butter, whole grain breads. Your body absorbs iron from meats easier than fruits and vegetables. To aid in the absorption of iron from fruits and vegetables, eat them with a good source of vitamin C.
ARTHRITIS: A daily serving of fresh fish or fish oil capsules helps to give relief of arthritis and other joint pains. 3-4 walnuts eaten daily, on an empty stomach, will help. ASTHMA: Mix 1 tsp. honey with 1/2 tsp. cinnamon and take it at night before going to bed. Avoid taking aspirin, as this may invoke an asthma attack.
BAD BREATH: Boil some cinnamon bark in a cup of water. Store it in a clean bottle in your bathroom. Use it as a mouthwash frequently. Parsley leaves are rich in chlorophyll, nature’s own deodorizer. Chew some leaves regularly and your breath will remain fresh. You can chew some cardamom seeds to sweeten your breath.
CONSTIPATION (IN ADULTS): Eat a few black licorice sticks. Take apple pectin. Make sure you’re getting enough Folic Acid in your diet. Drinking ginger tea will help start a bowel movement. CONSTIPATION (IN SMALL CHILDREN): Soak 6-8 raisins in hot water. When cool, crush well and strain. When given routinely even to little infants, it helps to regulate bowel movement.
HICCUPS: Only 2 remedies have I ever know to actually work. The first listed makes the most sense, since a hiccough is simply a spasm of the diaphragm, and you need to disrupt this spasm. The second offers no rhyme or reason, but works nonetheless. Breath in as deeply as you can, then exhale as hard as you can; repeat 10 times; when exhaling the last time, keep the air pushed out, not taking another breath for as long as you can stand. This normally works the first try, but repeat if necessary. Be sure to sit down when doing this. This is a remedy only feasible when sitting at a bar. Have the bartender fill a small glass with club soda. Light a match and drop it, then drink the water quickly (being careful not to drink the match). It works, but I don’t know why! Drink 1/2 glass water, slowly. Keep a tsp. of sugar in your month and suck slowly. Suck 2-3 small pieces of fresh ginger. Take a large mouthful of water with out swallowing, plug both ears, and slowly begin to swallow the water. Unplug your ears and you’re hiccup free! Eat a heaping teaspoon of peanut butter all at once.
